Emmitt married his beloved wife Barbara Jean Wendtorf (Mayo) (10 Sep 1946-3 Aug 2016) on 7 Sept 1965. They adopted a son, David (born in 1969) in 1972. He was an avid collector of many things (Roy Rogers & Hopalong Cassidy; knives; Beanie Babies; Fenton, Tiffin, & Viking glassware; Native American artifacts; among others), raised and showed rabbits throughout the Midwest, and was a CB enthusiast using the handle "Honest Abe" because of his resemblance to him.

Emmitt was the son of Arcie and Mary (Rose) Adkins, and had many siblings: Willie, Chester, Charlie, Nadine, Vercie (Bea), Mattie Jean, Earl and Tommy. Of these, only Tommy survives.
