John Baker Cummins was born on July 31, 1873 in Hickman County, Tennessee, and he was the son of Samuel Moore Cummins (1838–1918) and his wife Sara Ann (Baker) Cummins (1848–1924).

Raised in Hickman County, he was married there on January 29, 1898 to Amy Frances Lyell (1879-1953), the daughter of John Robert Lyell (1846–1906) and Roseanna Malissa (Beasley) Lyell (1850–1924).

A retired conductor with Nashville Chattanooga & Saint Louis Railroad and living at 2008 Beechwood Avenue in Nashville, John was 89 years old, a widower and had arteriosclerosis when he had a stroke and died on July 28, 1963 at Davidson County Hospital, where he had been for a little more than fourteen months.

Survivors included sons John Baker Cummins Jr in Denver, Colorado, E W Cummins of Washington DC, Harold Cummins at North Augusta, South Carolina and Sam L Cummins in Nashville, daughters Mrs M F Griffin and Mrs Harvill Gibson of Nashville, brothers A S Cummins and W C Cummins at Duck River, sister Miss Mattie Cummins also in Duck River, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services were held on July 30th at Roesch-Patton Funeral Home, and burial was in Woodlawn Memorial Park, Nashville.
