John was born November 19, 1946 in Memphis to Minnie Lou and John Murphy Ferrel, Sr. He was a 1965 graduate of Memphis High School and then attended Clarendon College. He married Shirley Sue Watson on September 1, 1966 in Memphis. John owned Ferrel's Ace Hardware from 1970-1989, then went to work for Red River Sales in 1989 until his retirement in 2011. After he retired in 2011, he and Sue traveled. He worked as a camp host for several years in Red River and Pagosa Springs, Colorado. He was a member and president of the Memphis Lions Club and a former member of the Memphis Volunteer Fire Department.

His grandchildren were the light of his life. He traveled many miles for baseball for the boys and softball for the girls. If the kids were doing something, he was there. His later days when he couldn't attend he would watch Kix and the WT Buffs on his iPad. He still didn't miss. He taught all of them to fish and made sure they had a tackle box. He made sure the girls could fish too. Each year he looked forward to the family annual trip to Red River. A lot of them learn to bait their first hook and he saw to it they caught a fish. Many a memory has been made in his barn. He said open the door and someone will come.

He was preceded in death by his parents, J.M. Ferrel and Minnie Lou Ferrel; and a son, John Michael.

Survivors include his grandchildren, Allissa Maldonado and husband Khoury. KaLeigh Coleman, Allie Coleman, Kix Ferrel, and Jax Ferrel; his wife, Sue Ferrel; his children, John Mark Ferrel and wife Chrysta and Shelly LaDon Coleman and husband Chett; his sisters, Kay Hightower and husband Bo and Bobbie Jester.

The family request memorials be sent to Hall County EMS.
