Professional Basketball Coach, College Basketball Coach. After attending the University of Wisconsin, he began his lengthy coaching career initially at the high school level. Following some stints as an assistant coach, he became head coach of the Bradley University basketball program (1978 to 1986) and during his tenure, he guided the Braves to the National Invitation Tournament title in 1982. During the course of his career, he received National College Coach of the Year honors twice (1980 and 1986). He joined the professional ranks in 1986 as an assistant coach under Chuck Daly with the Detroit Pistons and was on staff when Detroit captured the NBA Title in 1989. For parts of three-seasons (1989 to 1991), he served as head coach of the Indiana Pacers and guided them to a playoff berth in 1990. He went on to serve as an assistant coach under Chris Ford with the Milwaukee Bucks (1996 to 1998). After retiring as a coach, he served as a sportscaster in the Chicago-area and later became president of operations and general manager of the Vancouver/Memphis Grizzlies. He was the younger brother of Vietnam War Medal of Honor recipient Captain Humbert Roque Versace.
