Dan G. Kramer
La Grande, Oregon
February 25, 1926 - February 16, 2022

Dan Kramer, one of Union County's few remaining World War II veterans, died Feb. 16, 2022, at Grande Ronde Hospital. He was 95.

Dan moved to La Grande in June 2012 and took up residence at Grande Ronde Retirement Residence, where he enjoyed playing (and calling) bingo with his fellow residents. During his 10 years in La Grande, Dan came to truly appreciate his status as a WW II veteran, due largely to the rapport he developed with other veterans in the area. In 2018 he participated in an Honor Flight tour to the National World War II Memorial and other sites in Washington, D.C.

Dan was born Feb. 25, 1926, in Warwick, N.D., to Stella and Theodor Kramer. The family moved to Bingen, WA., in August 1938. Dan attended Columbia High School in White Salmon, WA., graduating in January 1944. He turned 18 that February. With the war raging and Dan's older brother, Frank, serving as a gunner in the Navy, Dan decided to join the Navy. He went through boot camp at Camp Farragut, Idaho. He was assigned to the USS Algol, an attack cargo ship, as a radioman. The ship and its sailors sailed throughout the Asian Pacific Theater until the war ended in August 1945. Dan received an honorable discharge from the Navy in May 1946.

He returned to Bingen, where he worked in the sawmill for a short time before enrolling at Yakima Junior College, which he attended for a year. He hired on as a surveyor for crews that were installing the BPA power lines that run across Oregon. While working in the La Grande area in 1951, Dan met Susan Saunders at a local dance, and it wasn't long before the two were married. They settled in Bingen, lived in Hood River for a short time, and then moved to White Salmon, WA. A daughter, Danee, was born in 1954, and a son, Ted, was born in 1955.

Dan and Susan continued their love of ballroom dancing and became dance instructors as a hobby. They taught throughout the Columbia Gorge area. In 1962, they were selected to teach dancing on a six-week Matson Line cruise throughout the South Pacific, with stops in such places as Bora Bora, Fiji, New Zealand, Australia and Hawaii.

In 1955 Dan switched careers. He hired on with the Columbia River Log Scaling Bureau as a scaler and worked as sawmills along the Columbia River until he accepted a transfer to the Eugene area in 1964.

Dan and Susan later divorced, and Dan married Barbara Jones in Eugene in 1971. Dan was promoted to being a check scaler for the Columbia River Log Scaling Bureau. He was transferred to Albany and soon after to the Gresham area, where they lived until Dan retired. The couple moved to Clackamas for a short time and then to Phoenix, just outside Medford. Dan and Barbara became involved and active with the Ashland Nazarene Church. Dan pursued hobbies such as woodworking and became known for making wooden cartoon cutouts, many of which graced the 3rd floor hallway at Grande Ronde Retirement during the 10 years he lived there.

Barbara died in September 2011. Dan continued living in Medford until he decided to make the move to La Grande in June 2012.

Survivors include Dan's daughter, Danee Myers of McMinnville; son, Ted Kramer (wife Karyl) of La Grande; step-son, Roy Jones of Roseburg; grandchildren Jebidiah Kramer (wife Jennifer) of Haiku, Maui, Hawaii; Michaele Myers of Minneapolis; Nicolle Myers of Seattle; Abby Myers of Vancouver, WA; and step-granddaughter Sara Hadley of Elgin; four great-grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his second wife, Barbara Jones.

A memorial service will be held at Grandview Cemetery in June. Details will be announced closer to the date.~~~Loveland Funeral Chapel
