Douglas Bryan Daniels, Sr., 88, of Poplarville, Mississippi, passed away on Monday, February 21st, 2022 in Asbury Hospice House, Hattiesburg.

Doug was a very successful athlete, thoroughly enjoying sports and the lifelong friendships he developed through them. As a result of this success, he received many awards and honors including: football player under Coach Dobie Holden at Pearl River, named to the All-State First Team as quarterback, awarded the J.J. Holcomb Most Outstanding Athlete Award at PHS and PRC. While in the army, stationed in Germany, Doug played football for the 12th infantry and received the 1955 Northern European All-Conference First-Team quarterback. As head coach and mathematics instructor at Poplarville High School, the 1957 and 1959 PHS baseball teams won the DeSoto Conference Championship and in 1959, he was named "Coach of the Year" when PHS celebrated their first undefeated/untied football season. He retired from PHS as District Director of Guidance and was awarded the USM Most Outstanding Counselor. In more recent years, Doug was inducted into the Pearl River Community College Sports Hall of Fame and the Mississippi Community and Junior College Sports Hall of Fame, and was awarded the 2020 PRCC Lifetime Achievement Award.

The community of Poplarville was dear to Doug, and he invested his lifetime there serving as Poplarville Community Center manager and lifeguard, supervising a little league program, and coaching a youth baseball team. He also served as president of the North Pearl River County Chamber of Commerce and served on the Hancock Bank Pearl River County Advisory Board of Directors for 22 years. He was named Poplarville's "Citizen of the Year" in 1979. He was also a lifelong member of First Baptist Church.
