Bessie MacNeal Obituary in Bay Area Reporter

If you "grew up" in the Castro during the 1970s and early 1980s, you knew Bessie (Fish) MacNeal, waitress at Orphan Andys, The Castro Cafe, and Welcome Home, and clerk at the corner drug store, all the while dyslexic and unable to read or write.
Bessie lived on Pond St. with her husband Ron and supported, loved and enjoyed all those who lived or visited the area. Watching the PBS special The Castro , Bessie was proud to know that she was part of the early history of the area.
After moving to Northern California in the mid 1980s, she lost Ron; brother Wil, (once married to Jackie Starr); and brother "Ducky", but was found by her four biological children left in the Baltimore, MD area when she had to move for her own safety, ending up in San Francisco.
Bessie had quadruple by-pass surgery in 2006 and was healing well when, at 72, a major brain stroke took her from all she loved on June 7, 2007 without time for goodbyes.
In addition to her children, Bessie leaves grandchildren, nephews, a sister and brother, long time companion James and a whole lot of new, and a few old friends.
