Charles A. Bridges
GIRARD - Charles A. Bridges, 65, of Girard died at 6 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 30, 2007, at John Cochran VA Hospital in St. Louis.

Charles was born in Virden, the son of Amos E. and Elizabeth S. (Adams) Bridges. He married Toyoko Chien in 1972 in Okinawa, Japan. Later, he married Karen Fulk Bridges in 2001 in Girard.

Charles was a graduate of Girard High School class of 1962 and received his associate's degree from Lincoln Land Community College in 1981. He worked for Macoupin County as a deputy sheriff for more than 14 years. He also served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War aboard the USS Kitty Hawk. He was a member of the U.S. Air Force and Army National Guard and had a total of 16 years of service time. He was past commander and district commander of AMVETS Post 108 in Carlinville, a member of the Virden Masonic Lodge 61 AF&AM as well as past post and district commander of American Legion Post 386 in Virden. He held several state commissions with the American Legion in Illinois, was chaplain for American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Sons of American Legion and AMVETS and was awarded the 21st District outstanding award in 1992. He was a member of Ansar Shrine in Springfield and a coach for Sparc Olympics and was a past Scoutmaster for Troop 62 in Virden.

Charles is survived by his wife, Karen, sons; Charles A. Bridges Jr. of Georgia, Chris T. Bridges of Indianapolis; daughter, Sara Louise King of St. Petersburg, Fla.; stepson, Ken Lee of Girard, IL; brother, Jim (wife, Hope) Bridges of Portland, Ore.; sister, Sharon K. (husband, Edward) Patton of Nilwood; uncle, Albert (wife, Ruby) Adams of Joliet; aunt, Lilian Jackson of Gillespie; three grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents and wife, Toyoko Chien.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2008, at Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home in Girard. Masonic services will be at 7:30 p.m. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2008, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Terry Turner and the Rev. Randol Mercer officiating.
