He was a retired employee of Fairchild Buick-Cadillac of Ashland. He was a member of Lewis Memorial Baptist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, having served during World War II.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Elmo and Curtis Coleman, and one sister, Nannie Mae Bartley. He is survived by his wife, Josephine Mullins Coleman; two sons, Danny Ray Coleman of Greenville, S.C., (2020), and Timothy Dale Coleman of Milton, W.Va. (1954-2016); three sisters; grandchildren.
