Benjamin B. Price was a co-founder, along with County Collector Samuel Williams, of the Taney County Republican in November 1895. Price had just completed his own term as Prosecuting Attorney when the paper was started. Most issues of the Republican survive. Price is frequently listed as one of the founders of the Taney County League of Law and Order, better known as the Bald Knobbers, a vigilance committee, oddly enough, that stressed enforcement of the law in the mid-1880's and which was founded soon after Spelling's shooting.

Thomas C. Spelling had been the Prosecutor a decade earlier, 1882-84. He studied for the law as a school teacher in Taney County. Born in Tennessee, Spelling apparently survived the shooting. On the eve of World War I, he's living with a nephew and family and practicing law in Manhattan, New York. The newspaper article appeared in the National Republican, Washington City (D.C.), February 18, 1885.
