Jeffrey Alan McCarter, age 59, of Sevierville, passed away February 15, 2022.

The Lord chose to give Jeff the gift of peace on the day following Valentine's Day which was Jeff and Sandy's 37th year anniversary of when he proposed.

To say Jeff was a dynamite in a small package, would be a true statement. To those who knew him, he went by the nickname of "Gimlet".

Jeff was a person who lived to serve and help others, as demonstrated by his life's works.

In the early 1980's, he held the title of Constable, and was also a deputy and dispatcher under Sheriff Carmen Townsend. He also served as the Civil Defense Director for Sevier County before the state of Tennessee mandated each county hire a full time EMA Director.

Jeff was honored to be the 5th District County Commissioner from 1986 – 2006, during which time he served on multiple committees.

Jeff's life blood was the Sevier County Volunteer Fire Department. Starting out and being trained by Chief Jim Atchley and others, Jeff spent 41 years with the department, ending under Chief Steve Whaley. He served on multiple committees and was instrumental in helping to construct the new volunteer fire department building.

Jeff was employed with Sevier County Utility District and retired as their Director of Operations after 25 years of service. Jeff had obtained his Sea Captain license in hopes of operating a small fishing business in Gulf Shores after his retirement. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Sevierville.

Jeff was preceded in death by his parents Truman and Faye Ramsey McCarter, sister and brothers-in-law, Susie Chambers Maples, Ronnie Chambers, Ben Maples; and father-in-law Carroll H. Matthews.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra Matthews McCarter; son, Trenton J. McCarter; mother-in-law, Mary E. Matthews; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Michael D. Matthews (Stacy), Craig Matthews (Lisa). In addition, Jeff is survived by nieces and nephews, Eric Chambers, Brad Chambers, Yvonne England, Shawn Matthews and Ben Duncan; as well as many close family members. He is also survived by special friends, Steven and Robin Huskey, Rick Valentine, Mike Jenkins, Mike Creel and the members of the Sevier County Volunteer Fire Department.

The family would like to thank Dr. John Faust and staff, the Sevier County Volunteer Fire Department, and the Lord for getting us through troubling times.

The family will receive friends from 1-3PM Sunday, February 20, 2022 in the West Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home, Sevierville with service to follow at 3PM with Pastor Dwayne White officiating. Family and friends will leave in procession 10:30AM Monday, February 21, 2022 from Atchley Funeral Home, Sevierville for the 11AM graveside service and interment at Atchley's Smoky Mountain Memory Gardens.
