Rev. Dr. Howard W. Abbott, Sr., 84, of Troy, Ohio and formerly of Prosperity, South Carolina passed away at 9:55 A.M. on Thursday, August 23, 2007 at Upper Valley Medical Center, Troy. He was born on February 27, 1923 in Woodburn, Iowa to the late Harry P. and Wilamena (Mann) Abbott. Howard married Beverly J. Hermen on April 9, 1989 and she survives.
Other survivors include his son, Harry Wayne Abbott of Portage, Indiana; daughter and son-in-law, Sue and Ed Green of Prosperity, South Carolina; 2 adopted daughters and son-in-law, Vivian and Gerard Hoesk of Chicago, Illinois, Zita Barr of Vienna, Austria; stepson and wife, Michael and Audrey Lawrence of Tipp City; stepdaughter, Becky Lawrence of Franklin, Tennessee; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; brother, Harry Paul Abbott of Little Rock, Arkansas; sister, Jeanette Hutchinson of Bedford, Texas.
In addition to his parents, Howard was preceded in death by his son, Howard W. Abbott, Jr. and his daughter, Judy West.
Rev. Dr. Abbott attended First Baptist Church, Troy and was a member of First Baptist Church in Morrison, Illinois.
He was an Army and Air Force Veteran of WWII having served in the Calvary while with the Army and as a Chaplain with the Air Force. Howard was a member of the American Legion Post #172 in Columbia, South Carolina and a 50 year member of the Sedalia Lodge #236 F. & A.M. in Sedalia, Missouri.
Howard retired as a Chaplain from the Iowa Department of Corrections after 23 ½ years of service. He previously worked as a Chaplain with the Michigan City, Indiana Department of Corrections.
He graduated from high school in Little Rock, Arkansas and attended Drake University. Howard also attended several Seminaries as well as an Auctioneer School. He held a Bachelor's Degree and a Doctorate in Theology.
Rev. Dr. Abbott had been a Pastor for over 60 years serving in Cainsville, Missouri, St. Louis, Missouri, Roseville, Illinois, Dickinson, North Dakota, Morrison, Illinois, Sidell, Illinois, Milesburg, Pennsylvania, Jacksonville, Florida, Marissa, Illinois and LaPorte, Indiana all part of the Southern Baptist Faith.
There will be a funeral service held at 1:00 P.M. on Monday, August 27, 2007 at First Baptist Church, 53 S. Norwich Rd., Troy, Ohio with Pastor Doug Magin officiating. A visitation will take place on Sunday, August 26, 2007 from 4:00 – 6:00 P.M. at Fisher-Cheney Funeral Home, 1124 W. Main St., Troy, Ohio. Interment will take place at Riverside Cemetery, Troy with a Military Service at the graveside by the Veterans Memorial Honor Guard of Troy. Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church Scholarship Fund, Troy, Ohio.
