WATERMAN

Mrs. Mary Crane

Mrs. Mary Crane passed away Tuesday morning, at the home of her sister, Mrs. Kate Low, in Waterman.

Mary Ellen Crane nee Long, was born December 17, 1849 at Hills Grove, Hancock County [sic], Illinois. At an early she, with her parents, moved to Macomb [sic], Ill., and resided in that vicinity until 13 years ago, when she came to Waterman to make her home with her sister, Mrs. Kate Low.

"Aunt Mary" as she was affectionately known, gave much of her life to the service of administering to the sick. She was of Baptist belief and a lover of the Lord and all that was good. She was of a very sociable nature and made friend where ever [sic] she went. For several months she had been failing in health and loosing strength, but always so independent and self reliant [sic], she kept up and about the house until about two weeks before her death.

She leaves two sisters to mourn her death, Mrs. Joanna Herron, of Kansas City, Mo., and Mrs. Kate Low of Waterman.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock from the home of Mrs. Kate Low. Rev. Fuller of Shabbona, had charge of the service and was assisted by Mrs. Bryce Ferguson and Mrs. C. C. Taylor who sang. Burial was in the North Clinton cemetery.

Pall bearers were M. E. Simpson, J. L. Eakle, Willis Lattin, R. C. Fay, Jessie Hardy and William Kauggman.

Mrs. W. H. Graver, a niece of the deceased, and her son, Robert, from Pittsburgh, Pa., Mrs. Joanna Herron, a sister, from Kansas City and Henry Andrews, a nephew, from LaCross [sic], Ill, were here to attend the funeral. The Hills Grove community was in the area that became Tennessee Township, McDonough County, rather than Hancock County. When the family was counted in 1850 they were surrounded by farmers. The above statement that they moved to Macomb when Mary Ellen was 13 years old and that she remained there for an extended interval, is inaccurate. The family, including Mary Ellen, was counted in Pilot Grove Township, Hancock County, Illinois in 1860. In 1870 and 1880 they were in Sciota, Sciota Township, McDonough County. Her father passed away there in 1889.

She married Henry Crane (son of Alexander and Rebecca Crane of Walnut Grove Township) on Dec 25, 1884. They were living next to Mary's widowed mother in the village of Sciota in 1900 and continued as man and wife until October 23, 1905, when Henry left and went to Los Angeles, California, according to a suit for maintenance Mary Ellen filed in 1907. Apparently they never reunited.
