Composer, Professor. George Henry Crumb was an American composer of avant-garde contemporary classical music. He beguiled audiences with an atmosphere of soundscapes that enveloped the listener and integrated a wide variety of unusual timbres through the manipulation of instruments. His large-scale work, "Echoes of Time and the River," won the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1967 followed by "Star-Child" in 1977 which won a Grammy Award. His ensembles ranged from the leanest to the richest and often incorporated voices of children and adults, such as his 1970 work, "Ancient Voices of Children." Crumb often spoke of being influenced by composers of the past such as Bach, Chopin, Mahler, and Strauss. Some of his most famous students include composers Jennifer Higdon, Melinda Wagner, and the late Christopher Rouse.
