JoAnna Claire Stephens
Boise, Idaho - JoAnna Claire Stephens, daughter, sister, and friend to so many, passed peacefully on January 21st, 2022, after complications from brain cancer. She was an avid reader, writer, artist, and storyteller.
She was born on Mother's Day, May 8th, 1988, in Coeur d'Alene, ID, to John and Lisa Stephens. Her name is a combination of her grandmothers' names, JoAnne Farrer and Anna Claire Stephens.
JoAnna always possessed a happy, creative spirit. She knew at an early age she wanted to be an actress. She'd delight friends and family by acting out scenes from "I Love Lucy," sharing pictures, and modeling hand-crafted outfits. JoAnna was treasured and adored by her two older sisters and was a welcome tag-along growing up. Her personality and humor lit up the room, and she was a joy to be around.
She graduated from Idaho Falls High School in 2006 where she excelled in writing and journalism. She also played high school and club volleyball and softball. After high school, JoAnna attended Boise State University, where she earned a BA in Performance Arts. She enjoyed college life and made many life-long friends. She acted in plays and even appeared in a number of local commercials.
JoAnna always had a sense of determination and adventure. After graduating in 2010 she moved to Los Angeles, CA, where she continued her education in cinematography and film production. She loved this time in her life. Over the years her passion for the industry shifted towards behind the camera roles in editing and directing. Her charismatic, can-do attitude paired with her industry know-how and advanced technical skills allowed her to thrive in the fast-paced environment of media distribution and mobile platform development. Her professional accomplishments include Director of Development, Futurism Entertainment, and Co-Founder of Mobile First Entertainment.
In the fall of 2017 she was diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), an aggressive, terminal brain cancer. Determined not to let it get her down, she began to shift her focus on healing and helping others. She became a certified yoga instructor, traveled the world, and participated in many wellness retreats. She kept a positive outlook and even during difficult times would "turn her frown upside down." She understood that her path forward was a hard one, but that it was also a path to higher learning and a greater awareness. Not just for her, but for us all. Her writing and YouTube videos allowed her to share her story and connect with others in need of support.
She is survived by her parents, John and Lisa Stephens, her two sisters Jennifer Stephens and Nichole Starman (Dave Starman), her nephews Leo, Jack, Spencer, and niece Elena. She will be interred at Rose Hill Cemetery in Idaho Falls.
We celebrate JoAnna's life, her tremendous journey, and the impact she has had on so many. We are deeply touched by the outpouring of support from family and friends.
It is hard to express the grace and beauty of how she lived. Her videos represent her resilience while facing insurmountable odds and her vulnerability in the process. She was never a victim, always the warrior.
