Mary is David Boyce's second wife. According to censuses she was born in England in 1836. She first shows up with David on the 1857 Minnesota Territorial Census. They are living in Gillford, Wabasha, MN. They have two sons, John who is three and born in Wisconsin and Jesse who is three months born in Minnesota. Based on this, David and Mary would have been married 1853-54. There is no record of their marriage in Ontario, Canada where David is from. Canada did not start recording vital records until 1869. Churches kept records, but if they weren't reported to the county or if David and Mary were not married in a church, there would be no record at the county level. Mary was 14 years younger than David and would have been about 17 when they married.

David and Mary had seven children: John, born 1854. He died before 1860. Jesse Curtis (1857-1941) Findagrave Memorial #162089214. Eliza Mary (1859-1905) #215954181. Interesting to note: On the early censuses while living with her parents, Eliza is called Mary. It's only when she becomes married that her name is Eliza.Fred Romaine (1860-1933) #132292628. Nellie - There is a gap of about four years between Fred and William. Based on their births, she could have been born about 1862 and died between then and 1865. Or, she could have been born after Martha. Her tombstone reads: Nellie, dau of D and ML Boyce. #33224025. Note: she is not David's spouse as shown on an earlier memorial of his. William (1864-1941) #77745141. Martha Allisa or Alwilda (1867-?) Martha is a mystery at this point. She first married Abraham Lincoln Brown 18 Oct 1885 in Mondovi, Buffalo, Wisconsin. They then moved to Canada. On 1 Jun 1918 she married William Martin Goudette or Godette in King County, Washington. Martha's brother William's daughter-in-law Leola Louise Boyce was a witness. An Alwilda and William Godette are in the 1930 census in Port Susan, Snohomish, WA. William died 29 Nov 1935 in Everette, Snohomish, WA, spouse-Alwilda. Her son, Glen Arthur's death certificate says his mother is Alwilda. Ancestry members have her death as July 1938 (but no day?) in Everette, Snohomish, WA. but no source for this. They also do not show a marriage to William, so did they find a Martha Brown dying then? Washington Digital Archives has all deaths recorded from 1907-1996 and there is no record of her death under the name Martha or Alwilda Godette.

Ancestry members show Mary's maiden name as Moore. I can't find any record of this. There are at least six immigration records for a Mary Moore, born 1836 in England. But there is no way of knowing if she is any of these. Without a marriage record proving her name, I am reluctant to include a maiden name for her. If anyone can find a source for this, please leave an edit suggestion.

Mary took her own life on 30 Aug 1885. In the Dodge County Republican dated 10 Sept 1885 it said: On Sunday, the 30th ult. Mrs. David Boyce, a widow, residing in Gilford, Wabasha County, commited suicide by taking strychnine. She was well situated pecuniarily, enjoyed good health, and no reason is known for her self-destruction other than a morbid dissatisfaction with life. Her late husband, a former friend of the editor of this paper, has been dead about two years.

Mary is buried in plot 66 in Gillford Cemetery along with David and Nellie. There is no grave marker for her. On the USGenWebArchives, a Marge Utley had transcribed cemetery records that show she is buried here.

David Boyce was born 11 Sept 1822, probably in Ancaster, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada (his brother William was born there the year before). His parents were Jacob Boice (1795-1876) and Elizabeth Youker (1800-1828). Jacob was born in Bethleham, Albany, NY. They are from Dutch descent. David's sixth great grandfather came from Amsterdam, Holland, Netherlands to America before the mid 1600's. On 18 April 1846 David married Eliza Linn (who was born in Ireland) in Gore District, Ontario, Canada. The marriage took place in Biggar Wesleyan (Methodist) Church. He was 10 years older than she was. They were then living in Onondaga, Brant County, Ontario. Their first child was a daughter, Johanna, born about 1846-47. Her tombstone reads 1850, but that is not correct. It shows she died in 1909. Ancestry members have her death in Hoquiam, Grays Harbor, WA. The Washington Digital Archives has no record of this. Her findagrave Memorial is #84320784. She married William O'Hara 21 Oct 1863 in Gillford in David's house. David and Eliza's daughter Georgianna was born 19 Apr 1850. On 13 Sept she married Francis M. Barber in Gillford. She died 30 Oct 1897 in Burnhamville, Todd County, Minnesota by suicide. Her Memorial is #236069653. Considering the gap between the girls, there may have been another child.

On the 1851 Canadian census (taken 12 Jan 1852) they are living in Bayham, Elgin County, Ontario. The ages recorded are for how old they will be in 1852. David, 31, is a blacksmith. Eliza is 20, Johanna 5 and Georgianna 2. This is the last record of Eliza. In a document of her grandson William Barber's, he states that she was "insane". Did she commit suicide as well? Was she mentally ill? I have not been able to find any record for her yet. Elgin County has no record of her death or burial and there were no asylums in that area.

David then married Mary. He probably would have left Bayham and gone to Detroit to enter America. There are no records of immigration through there until later. In 1854 they are in Wisconsin and by 1857 in Gillford, Wabasha, Minnesota. They farmed 160 acres while David remained working as a blacksmith. On 9 Feb 1865 in Red Wing, MN he enlisted in Company G, Minnesota Heavy Artillery Regiment for the Civil War. He was mustered out on order from the war department at Chattanooga, Hamilton, Tennessee. He was in the hospital at the time. In April 1865 he caught a severe cold which caused inflammation of the head, eyes and swelling of the face and nostrils and catarrh (a build up of mucus in the sinuses which can be a chronic condition). He was in the hospital from July 25 to Aug 9th. This condition plagued him for years, causing a disability that rendered him unable to work. He applied for a disability pension from the army. He had hired two lawyers, had testimony from neighbors and doctors, yet was rejected twice. He died without ever being able to get a pension. His death occurred on 10 Dec 1882 in Gillford. He is buried in Plot 66 at Gillford Cemetery. His Memorial is #33224013.

On the censuses he is listed as having been born in New York (his father was). On 21 Mar 1857 in Wabasha, he filed his Declaration of Intention to renounce his allegiance to Great Britain.

David received his land patent for 160 acres 10 May 1870. Over the years, the land was parceled off and sold until only 39 acres remained. After Mary's death, on 2 Jan 1886, each of the children gave up their portion of the inheritance to Fred. The original homestead burned down and he built another house in it's place.
