Former Alleghany County Director Of Social Services Dies At Age 86
Barbara Driver Kessler, 86, of Longdale Furnace, Clifton Forge, Virginia and more recently of Troutville, passed away Wednesday, January 19, 2022 at The Springs Nursing Home, Hot Springs.

Barbara was born September 26, 1935 in Clifton Forge to the late Ellery Broughman and Abigail Ford Broughman.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Frank Hammond, and second husband, Donald Driver.

Barbara is survived by her husband, John (Jack) Camden Kessler of Troutville; children, Scott Hammond of Clifton Forge, Cameran Carlin of Georgia, and Nicholas Driver of Clifton Forge; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Her son, Wesley Hammond of Clifton Forge, also died on January 19, 2022.

Barbara was a lifelong member of the Clifton Forge area with many very special and dear friends. She was known for her happy, gentle, and warm manner. She spent much of her life caring for others, having retired in 2010, after forty-two years as Director of Alleghany Department of Social Services.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, March 3, 2022 at 1:00 p.m., at Longdale United Methodist Church, Clifton Forge. The service will be conducted by Pastor Lester Kennedy. Because of Covid concerns wearing masks is recommended.
