A graveside service for Jean Louise Davenport, 92, of Myrtle Point, will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 20, at Myrtle Crest Memorial Gardens in Coquille. A memorial service will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Amling/Schroeder Funeral Service, Myrtle Point Chapel.
Jean was born May 18, 1914, in Myrtle Point to Harry and Ella (Bigelow) Guerin. She died Jan. 17, 2007, in Coos Bay.
Jean graduated from Myrtle Point Union High School in 1931 and attended Oregon Agricultural College in Corvallis for two years. She met her future husband, Lloyd "Duke" Davenport in high school and they were married on Sept. 20, 1935, in Ashland. After their marriage, Duke joined her in San Francisco, where Jean was attending Stanford Lane Teaching Hospital. She completed 18 months of her nursing education before returning to Oregon. The training she received was used often through the years. The couple developed an outstanding herd of registered jersey cows while operating dairy farms from 1941 until retiring in 1976. After retiring, they were involved in the sheep and beef industries until the last few years.
She was very active in the Coos County Extension Service for about 65 years, holding many offices and receiving several honors; but her main love for 55 years was leadership of the Twin Oaks 4-H Club. She enjoyed every aspect of the 4-H club and worked tirelessly on any project that came along, including helping to build what is now known as the Davenport Building at the fairgrounds; hauling kids on "super tours;" cooking for the Coos County club members at the state fair, etc. In 2004, she was inducted into the Oregon 4-H Hall of Fame for her outstanding service and dedication to 4-H and, in 1993, she was named a Woman of Achievement in Coos County. Jean always had a garden and, in her spare time, sewed for her family and refinished many items of furniture.
Jean Davenport is survived by her daughter, Shirley Melvin and fiancé Bill Johnson of Myrtle Point; granddaughters, Rhonda Fischer and husband Ted of Myrtle Point, Jeri Keeton and husband Kip of Ashland and Kathy Johnson and husband Russell of Williams; great-granddaughters, Stephanie Barklow of Bend, Heather Barklow of Bend, Jennie Ruh and husband Jeff of Beaverton, Amy Morgan of Medford and April Fischer of Myrtle Point; great-great-granddaughter, Valerie Ruh of Beaverton; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Duke; sister, Emma Guerin Kelker; and brother, Lorin Halsey Guerin.
