Actress. She graduated from the Silvio D'amico Academy of Dramatic Art in 1953 and from there she began her career on the stage playing some important roles "Sei storie da ridere" (1956) and "Capricci di Marianna" (1959). In 1959 she made her debut in the cinema with the film "Le dritte" and, immediately after, she met a director who would become the teacher, Michelangelo Antonioni. Together, Vitti and Antonioni made four films "L' avventura" (1960), "La notte" (1961), "L'eclisse" (1961) and "Deserto rosso" (1964). The life of the director and of the then young actress is she was also tied off the set by a romantic relationship that lasted about four years. In the second half of the 60s Monica Vitti switches to the comedy genre, demonstrating her strong comic talent and her acting power. Directed by Mario Monicelli in 1968 she plays "La ragazza con la pistola", in 1969 "Amore mio aiutami" by Alberto Sordi, in 1970 "Dramma della gelosia and "Tutti i particolari in cronaca" by Ettore Scola. Parallel to her film career, she also carries on her projects in the theater, acting in the play "La strana coppia" directed by Franca Valeri. In 1978 starred alongside the great Eduardo De Filippo in "I Cilindri." Italian cinema was experiencing a golden era thanks also to her, at the same time, some foreign directors don't let the opportunity slip away to having her in their films, Joseph Losey directed her in 1969 in "Modesty Blaise, la bellissima che uccide," Miklos Jancso in "La pacifista" (1971) and Louis Buñuel in "Il fantasma della libertà" (1974). The 80s push Monica Vitti away from the screens and her appearances become more and more sporadic. Monica plays in movies directed by her partner Roberto Russo, "Flirt" (1983) and" Francesca è mia" (1987). In 1990 she made her directorial debut with the film "Scandalo Segreto" with which she won the Golden Globe as director and interpreter. An extraordinary career and many awards, 5 David di Donatello as best actress (plus four other special awards), 3 Nastri d'Argento, 12 Globi d'oro (two of which for lifetime achievement) and a Golden Ciak for Lifetime Achievement, a Leone d'Oro for Lifetime Achievement in Venice, a Silver Bear at the Berlinale, a Cocha de Plata in San Sebastián, a BAFTA Award nomination. In 1993 her autobiography "Sette Sottane" was released. Sentimentally she had three long and important love stories, the first with the director Michelangelo Antonioni, then with the director of the photography Carlo Di Palma, and finally with the director, screenwriter and fashion photographer Roberto Russo with whom she married in 2000. In the last years of her life she no longer appeared in public due to a degenerative disease.
