Andrew Paul Rushing was the son of Jesse Joel Rushing and Mary Jane Barrett Rushing of Anson County, North Carolina. He enlisted at age 18 on 22 May 1861 in the Anson Ellis Rifles company, which later became Company A, 23rd Regiment North Carolina Troops, following his older brother Thomas Rushing (FAG#72037534). Private Andrew Rushing was wounded at the Battle of Seven Pines, Virginia on 31 May 1862, and returned to duty prior to the November 1862 muster. He was killed at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on 1 July 1863.
