Phil was born on June 7, 1936 in Burbank, California to Lloyd and Phyllis (Strother) Archibald. He attended Riverside schools and graduated from the University of California Riverside in 1958 with a degree in physics. In 1962, Phil married Allene Sands. They had two children, Susan and Charles. In 1991 Phil married Linda Dickey and their blended family included Ben LeVeque and Tricia LeVeque Eoff.

In 1956, he began his career as a research physicist in the Electricity and Magnetism Division of the Research Department at Naval Ordnance Laboratory Corona in Norco. In 1970 the Navy closed most of NOLC and transferred scientists to China Lake. In 1996, Phil retired 5 months shy of 40 years' service to the Navy. His work included authoring and co-authoring now declassified scientific papers, and co-authoring US Patent #3,104,148 for the invention entitled "electronic strobing system for observing repetitive, high speed, optical phenomena." This invention contributed to the development of laser tracking for the Sidewinder Missile Program, and assisted in measuring the refractive qualities of specialty mirrors for the Star Wars defense system.

Phil had many outdoor hobbies. An avid birdwatcher, he always kept binoculars in the car and he helped create and maintain chukar guzzlers. A life-member of the National Rifle Association, he was an accomplished marksman. He shot skeet and trap, and regularly won bench-rest rifle matches. He served as a Range Master, taught hundreds of children gun safety, and brought up his children and grandchildren with knowledge of and respect for firearms. A knife collector and craftsman, he enjoyed fashioning knives from raw materials he gathered both locally and from his travels. The knives he made supplemented his extensive global collection. Phil also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and deep-sea fishing. His grandsons enjoyed trips to Whitney Portal to go fishing with Grandpa Phil. He was happy to expose the boys to many facets of outdoorsmanship. His grandsons remember him as a kind, gentle, patient grandfather who wrestled on the floor with them, took them on wonderful travel adventures, and encouraged them to pursue their goals.

Phil was an active and dedicated member of Ridgecrest United Methodist Church where he served as a member of the building committee for the new sanctuary, as a longtime trustee, treasurer for many years and United Methodist Men. He valued his friendships in a Supper Group and two Coffee Groups. Phil was an avid supporter of the Maturango Museum and Ducks Unlimited. Over the years, he sponsored displays at the museum and always took guests to visit whenever they were in town. For Phil, one of the perks of living in Ridgecrest was visiting the nearby petroglyphs. Phil was a soft spoken, well-read, generous individual who loved to travel and was passionate about exploring the world with family and friends.

Phil is survived by his children Susan Archibald deBourguignon of Riverside, Charles Archibald of Ridgecrest, Ben LeVeque (Deb) of Encinitas, Tricia LeVeque Eoff (Mark) of Atlanta, and his grandsons Michael, Everett, and Chase LeVeque, Luke and Dillon Eoff and Nicholas deBourguignon. He was preceded in death by his wife Linda Westfall Archibald, parents Lloyd and Phyllis Archibald, brother Robert Lloyd Archibald, sister-in-law Linda Robinson Archibald and son-in-law Scott deBourguignon.

A delayed memorial is scheduled at 3 P.M. on Saturday February 12, 2022 at Desert Memorial Park. We ask that you please wear a mask. You are welcome to bring a chair if you prefer to sit. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Phil's life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Ridgecrest United Methodist Church or to the Maturango Museum.
