Elena Joyce Brewer was born to her parents Laura (Galligo) and Freddie Brewer on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota on January 27th, 1943.

She was a citizen of the Oglala Lakota Nation. She and her mother arrived in Omaha in the early 1950s. She attended elementary school at Our Lady of Lourdes in Porcupine, SD where she connected with her life-long friend, Barb (Toczek) Sears. She attended high school at Notre Dame Academy and graduated in 1961. She made many friends at Notre Dame Academy that became her lifelong friends.

A year later she met the man she would soon marry: Tom Dameron. The stunning pair married in October 1963 and had their first child, Teresa. They bought their forever home in 1966 to accommodate their soon expanding family. Their family grew with two more daughters: Roni and Becky.

As the years passed and her three girls became older, Elena decided to go back to school. She earned her Bachelor's degree in 1986 and her Master's degree in 1989, both in Social Work at UNO. With her degrees she worked as a social worker for the State of Nebraska and the Bureau of Indian Affairs (Winnebago Agency).
