He had lived in the Swansonville Community all of his life. He was a prosperous and well known farmer and leading member of the Primitive Baptist Faith.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Frances Giles Winstead Oakes and following children Elder W H Oakes, J L Oakes, Dr T J Oakes, Mrs. James Hundley, Mrs. Arthur Mitchell and stepson, Jack Winstead, all of Swansonville.
He is also survived by a brother W W Oakes of Callands, VA and two sisters Mrs. Henry Hundley of Swansonville and Mrs. Jenny Lacey of Whitmell, VA and eight grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted from his late residence.
Interment was in the Boaze Family Cemetery nearby.
