Hard working his entire life, Nelson made time to enjoy his family and friends by involving himself in their lives and community. He was a member of the Nick Stoner's of Wheelerville senior citizens, and the Boy Scouts when his sons were younger. He also loved dancing and was a member of the Sacandaga Swingers square dancing and the FJ&G dancing groups. Nelson made many friends and memories throughout the years at the family camp on Caroga Lake. He will be sadly missed.
He is survived by his wife Virginia Laird Sackett of Johnstown whom he married February 17, 1945 at the Trinity Reformed Church in Amsterdam. Nelson is also survived by his children; [nine are listed, including Daniel who died in 2020[. Additional survivors include twenty-three grandchildren, several great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Sackett was pre-deceased by a daughter Gail Sackett and three sisters; Elizabeth Mulligan, Dorothy Blair and Marion Hutton.
A funeral service will be held 1 pm Sunday December 29, 2013 at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St. Gloversville, with Reverend Laurie Garramone, Rector of St. John's Episcopal Church, Johnstown, officiating. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 11 am -1 pm prior to the service. Burial will be Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda.
