CROCKETT – Many Houston County residents are currently mourning the loss of Guy Gillette, Sr., a beloved performer and photojournalist who passed away Monday, Aug. 19 after a massive heart attack.

Among the mourners is Pipp Gillette, a son of Guy Gillette, Sr. and co-owner of the Camp St. Café in Crockett. The younger Gillette provided a telephone interview with 'The Messenger' just three days after his father's passing to provide a synopsis of his life.

"He was born in Minneapolis, MN and traveled a lot because of his father's work," Gillette began. "He was born Oct. 22, 1922 and died this past Monday – Aug. 19. He had a massive heart attack and apparently went quickly."

According to Gillette, his father possessed an avid interest in acting when he was a young man. He is said to have studied in New York City under Michael Chekhov, a famed Russian-American theatre practitioner, actor and director.

"When he was in New York City, he met Doris Porter, who was from Lovelady – the daughter of Hoyt and Lucy Porter," Gillette explained. "She was in New York City to study fashion design, and they met when they were working at the same restaurant."

After getting married, the couple returned to Lovelady, expecting their first child – Guy Gillette, Jr., who was born in Crockett.

"They moved back to New York – to Staten Island – and he worked on Broadway," Gillette went on. "He was in several Broadway plays."

At around this time, Gillette said, his father took interest in another hobby that would soon become an important part of his life – photography.

"He took photos in Lovelady (when they visited)," said Gillette. "And a friend of his saw some of the photos in their apartment."

According to Gillette, the friend encouraged his father to continue taking photographs and opened the door for him to do so professionally.

"Edward Steichen, the founder of the Museum of Modern Art, chose two of my father's pictures," Gillette said. "One of them was taken on the front porch of my grandfather's house in Lovelady."

The photos selected by Steichen were featured in an exhibit called 'Family of Man.' The exhibit traveled all around the world and featured the works of photographers from many different countries.

"There was a book put together of the photos from the exhibit – also called 'The Family of Man'," said Gillette. "And it is still available today. Usually, books come and go, but that one is still available after 60-something years."

Throughout the rest of his lengthy photography career, Gillette said, his father worked as a freelance photographer. Some of his subjects included actress Audrey Hepburn and musician Elvis Presley. His work has been seen in publications such as 'Life' magazine and 'The New York Times.'

"We used to come down to Lovelady almost every summer when we (my brother and I) were growing up," Gillette recalled. "And he would take photos and document his dad's life."

The photos will soon be available in a book published by the University of Oklahoma Press. Titled 'Family of the Land: the Texas Photography of Guy Gillette' the book is set to be released later this month.

"He (my father) got to see an advanced copy of it," Gillette said of the book. "He was thrilled.

"(In the book), there's some text written by a friend of my father – Andy Wilkinson from Lubbock," Gillette continued.

According to Gillette, Wilkinson will be appearing at Camp Street Café for a book signing Saturday, Oct. 12. Wilkinson will also be performing with his daughter, Emily Wilkinson, and friend, Andy Hedges.

As of his passing, Guy Gillette, Sr., was two months shy of his 91st birthday and three days shy of the anniversary of his wife's passing.
