Edna Mae Murphy was the daughter of John E. Murphy and his wife, Lula E.L. She was born in what was then Princess Anne County, Virginia (now city of Virginia Beach). She was married to Harvey Salmon Whitehurst in about 1926.

Edna Murphy Whitehurst, 94, passed away Feb. 22, 2004 in Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital.
Born in Princess Anne County, she was the daughter of the late Lula and John Murphy. She was a member of Charity United Methodist Church.
Those left to cherish her memory include her loving daughter, Shirley McChesney; two granddaughters, Diane and Nancy; two grandsons-in-law, Eddie and Chuck; two great -granddaughters, Tracy and Kristy; and a loving "Ma" to two great-great-grandchildren, Rachel and Clayton.
Love to her many faithful friends.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Maestas and Bailey Funeral Home, Baltic Ave. Chapel, Virginia Beach, where the family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 8 p.m. A graveside service will be held at Charity United Methodist Church, Thursday at 11 a.m., with Pastor Bob Cooper officiating.
Memorial donations may be made to Charity United Methodist Church. "
