Walter Lafayette Whitener was the son of Andrew Marcus Whitener and Minerva Emma Whitener of Catawba Co., NC. The family Bible lists twelve children: Gertrude, Eugene, Walter, Charles, Claude, Hettie, Katie, George, Fred, and Gordon Whitener, and twin girls, unnamed, who died at birth. Walter and two brothers, Eugene and Charles, moved to California when they were young. Walter served in World War I while living in California; he never married.
