Lois Lucille "Shorty" Luton, 88, of Blandinsville, Illinois passed away January 14, 2022 at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center, Burlington Iowa.
Lucille or fondly called Shorty by all that knew her, was born on Nov 3, 1933 near Fountain Green Illinois. She was the fourth of fourteen children to Lloyd and Nancy (Moore) Breiner. Shorty had many memories of growing up on the farm with twelve sisters and one brother. It was a modest life, where she learned life skills of hard work, patience, and tenacity, while forming deep loving relationships with her sisters.
After graduating from Northwestern High School in 1950, Shorty met the love of her life Edward Alan Luton, they married on May 21, 1952 on the Breiner farm in Blandinsville Illinois. This began a lifelong journey of love, family, and adventure. Shortly after retirement, they decided to move back to the farm life in their hometown of Blandinsville IL.
Edward and Shorty loved the outdoors and spent most of their recreational time traveling, camping and fishing throughout Arizona with lifelong friends and family. Shorty found joy in cooking, she was especially gifted with creating candy and sweets - peanut brittle was her specialty. She also loved baking cakes and pies as well as her personal recipe for tamales which always arrived around Christmastime. She was an excellent seamstress and a skilled leather crafter, making beautiful clothes and leatherworks including belts, wallets and purses for family and friends. Shorty also had a particular fondness for Western movies, especially those that included John Wayne. Any doubt to her love of the west is dashed by the memorabilia she collected including a 6' cutout of John Wayne that continues to reside in her sewing room.
Shorty's biggest love and passion in life was her family. She was a wonderful and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She doted on us all and was happiest when we all gathered together for a feast whether it was breakfast, dinner, Thanksgiving or Christmas. Along with Dad, Mom was a cornerstone to our family, an unwavering example of love, generosity, kindness, and humor. Two traits she exhibited, especially later in life, were her tenacity and resilience. She lived and died by the words never ever give up.
Our mom will be greatly missed, but her spirit and presence will always be with us, Thank You for showing us what True Grit really means.
