The Ringling News -- January 21, 1916

Assassination Tuesday Night.
J. M. lankinship, an old-time citizen of Courtney, was assassinated near his home Tuesday night. He heard shots fired under a bluff on Red River and went out to investigate. An hour later he was found with two bullet holes through his body. The person who done the killing has not been found and the assassination may remain a mystery.

Green Boys Charged with Recent Killing
Sam and Onis Green, country boys, livingn hear Courtney in the southern part of Jefferson County, were arrested the first of the week by Sheriff J. W. Biffle, charged with murdering J. M. Blankinship, an elderly man, near his home on Red River Tuesday, January 18th.

Sheriff Biffle and County Attorney Hamilton were in the Courtney community the first of the week investigating the killing and the latter states that the State has a good case against the boys. It is charged that the boys were hunting on the premises of the deceased and when he went out to stop them the younger boy shot him. Onis Green, who is believed to be the one who did the shooting was only fifteen years of age, while his brother, Sam, was seventeen.
