Sally Carol Mueller (McComas) passed away Oct. 16, 2021 under hospice care after two weeks at The Arbors of Fairlawn. She had suffered from debilitating arthritis for many years and had been homebound for several months.

Sally was born to James R. & Evelyn L. (Swan) McComas in Apple Creek, Ohio May 16, 1933.
She graduated from Wooster High School in 1951 and began her studies at The College of Wooster. In 1954 she married the love of her life, John N. Mueller of Burbank, Ohio.

As a wife and mother, Sally served her community as a Girl Scout leader, a PTA president, a band booster, a volunteer poll worker, a Sunday school teacher, book club leader, and church committeeperson.

She eventually graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Education from the University of Akron in 1971, followed by a Master's in 1983. She taught elementary school in Springfield Township beginning in Jan. 1972, first at Milroy and then at Schrop, retiring in 1999 after 28 years.

In her retirement she volunteered to read weekly for the blind on the radio and to help staff the information desk at the Seiberling Nature Realm. She was an avid supporter of both the visual and performing arts and a pretty good bridge player.

Sally was preceded in death by her husband, John, in 1980, and then by her parents, her brother and sister-in-law, Harrold and Hazelyn McComas, and her brother, Stanley McComas.

Left to celebrate her amazing courage and love for life are her two children and their spouses, her seven grandchildren and their spouses, her Swan cousins, her niece, three nephews, several great-nieces and great-nephews, many friends, colleagues, and classmates. She also leaves three half-sisters on her father's side. Sally's last days were eased by the devoted care of her daily and evening in-home helpers.

Remember her when you wear "Sally Red". Read a little every day.

When asked how she wanted to be remembered, she offered us this:
"I would rather be ashes than dust!
I would rather that my spark should burn out in a brilliant blaze
than it should be stifled by dry-rot.
I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow,
than a sleepy and permanent planet.
The function of man is to live, not to exist…" ~ Jack London

There are multiple stars in your crown, Sally. Well done, good and faithful servant. From dust you have come and to dust you shall return. May your name be written in the stars and your dust become stardust.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to UMCOR, The Akron Art Museum, your local NPR station, or The Children & Teachers Foundation of the Chicago Teachers Union are humbly requested.
