Sgt. Major (Ret) Ronald Neal Parks, 84, of Huntingdon, went to be with the Lord Sunday, January 9, 2022, at Penn Highlands Hospital, Huntingdon, PA. Born November 14, 1937, in Huntingdon, PA, he was a son of Walter C. (Sam) and Virginia (Neil) Parks. He was united in marriage to the late Donna M. Garner on May 4, 1958, by the Reverend Lister.
He is survived by three children, Ronald I. Parks and his wife, Brandy, of Helotes, TX, Tamara "Tammy" (Parks) Myers and her husband, Dale, of McConnellstown, and Steven E. Parks of Huntingdon; six grandchildren whom he loved very much, Lance Myers of Altoona, Timothy Myers of Pittsburgh, Arielle Rhodes and her wife Jamie of McVeytown, Kira Myers and her partner Jonathan Wall of Huntingdon, Rachel and Ryan Parks of Helotes, TX; a sister, Barbara A. Taylor of Havre de Grace, MD; and sister-in-law, Cindy Lue Parks of Peoria, IL. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Donna, in 2020, brother Marshall S. Parks in 2020, and an infant son, Ronald N. Parks, Jr., in 1960.
Mr. Parks was a very active member of The First Regular Baptist Church, Huntingdon, having served many years as a deacon of the church. At the time of his passing he was the treasurer for the board of deacons.
He attended Huntingdon and Altoona public schools and was a 1956 graduate of Huntingdon High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the Army and rose to the rank of Sergeant Major, with several stateside and overseas tours, including a tour in Vietnam. During his military career Mr.Parks was awarded several honors including the Bronze Star. Upon retirement from the Army in 1977, he continued his service to the nation as an Army civilian at Letterkenny (Chambersburg, PA) and Sierra Nevada (Herlong, California) Army Depots retiring again in 2002.
Mr. Parks was a graduate of Penn State University, having earned a Bachelor Degree. He also held a Master's Degree from the University of Michigan.
He loved history and doing genealogical research, serving several years as secretary of the Parke Society and spending many hours combing through records at the Huntingdon County Historical Society. He also enjoyed the company of fellow veterans at the VFW Post and American Legion in Huntingdon.
Mr. Parks was an avid sports fan rooting for the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Pittsburgh Pirates, and Penn State football. He loved to fish and had planned to go this spring with his son-in-law.
Friends will be received from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. on Thursday, January 13, 2022, and from 10:00 A.M. until the hour of service on Friday, January 14, 2022, at the John B. Brown Funeral Home, 417 Washington Street, Huntingdon, PA. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, January 14, 2022, at the funeral home, with the Reverend David E. Ford officiating. Interment with military honors accorded by the combined VFW/American Legion Honor and Color Guards will be in the Old Stone Church Cemetery, Penn Township, James Creek.
