Charner enlisted in the Union Army in October, 1862, serving with Company G, 6th Tennessee Volunteer Calvary.

He was captured by the Confederates and sent to the infamous Andersonville Prison in Georgia, where he died from disease on August 15, 1864. He is buried at the National Cemetery there. (www.bryan-frierson.com)
