Mrs. Rebecca Merriman Dead

One of the early Pioneers of this County - Lived here nearly 82 years

Sunday a few minutes before 12 O'clock noon,Mrs. Rebecca Merriman passed peacefully away following a stroke of paralysis occuring the evening before at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Harry Glassley with whom she had made her home for the past two years. She was the widow of Dr. Elijah Merriman, for years one of the most well known family physicians in the county. And since the death of her husband thirteen years ago last June Mrs. Merriman had resided alone at her own home on State street. However as it was deemed best for her to have care, she gave up her home and went to stay with her daughter. During the last several years of her life, she had suffered several paralytic strokes but with all, she was able to look after and care for herself. Saturday evening while seated in the Harry Glassley home, talking to her daughter she was stricken and remained unconscious until death.
Rebecca Parrett was born in Fayette County, Ohio, Feb. 7, 1836 to the late John D.Parrett and Nancy Parrett, who nine months after the birth of her daughter Rebecca, came to Cleveland township with in the fall of 1836. John D. Parrett, with his father Joseph Parrett, Jr., purchased the land on which South Whitley is now located. Joseph Parrett laid out the town of South Whitley and his son John D., father if Mrs. Merriman built the first home in the place.
March 20, 1856 Rebecca Parrett was united in marriage to Dr. Elijah Merriman, who three years before had started a medical practice in this city. To this union were born seven children, two dying in infancy. The surviving are Mrs. Harry Glassley(Mary), Lowell Merriman of this city; Mrs P.L. Roinson (Robison)(Wilmetta) of Bluffton. Mrs. Nellie Sheibley of Mishawaka and(John)Everett Merriman of Ft. Wayne.
At the time of her death, Mrs. Merriman was aged 81 years, 10 months and nine days and one of a family of seven children of whom only the brother, Phillip Parrett survives. The deceased was a devout member of the Baptist Church for many years and while her husband lived both were active in all church work.
Dr. and Mrs. Merriman were well known and highly respected by every family for many miles around South Whitley and by their many acts of kindness won friends throughout the entire community. Mrs. Merriman's death is deaply felt by all who knew her as she was a lady of kind disposition.
The funeral of Mrs. Merriman was held Tuesday afternoon from the Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Chas. Roadarmel of Alexandria, an old friend of the Merriman family. His sermon was very fitting and Rev. R.E.Booker also spoke a few words. The remains were laid to rest in the South Whitley cemetery. The pallbearers were Jessie A. Glassley, Samuel Norris, Frank McConnel, Calvin McDonald, William Cordill and Carl Ulery.
