Walter Barnett, 96, of Pana, passed away on Sunday, January 2, 2022 in his home. Walter was born on November 29th, 1925 to George R. and Celia O. (Coffey) Barnett in Stonington, IL. He resided in Stonington with his parents until the age of seven when they moved to Decatur. Growing up he was active in the United Brethren Church participating in many activities including playing on the Church baseball and basketball teams.
In 1943, at the age of 17, he answered his nation's call and enlisted in the United States Navy. Unable to fulfill his desire to serve aboard a submarine due to color blindness he was accepted into Hospital Corpsman training something that would heavily influence the direction of the rest of his life. While in the Navy during World War II he served at Great Lakes Naval Station, Bethesda Naval Hospital, served aboard 3 different ships in the Pacific Theater of Operations and also served as a medic for a short period of time with a guerrilla unit in the Philippine Islands. He spoke often of the pride that he felt to see the raising of the flag at Iwo Jima, an event that he witnessed while treating a wounded marine.
After his discharge from the Navy at the end of 1946, he drew on his medical experience and began nursing school at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Chicago, IL. His training was interrupted in 1951 due to recall back into the Navy. He served another year and a half at the Marine Amphibious Base in Little Creek, Virginia as a Pharmacist Mate. Upon his completion of military service he finished his nurses training and enrolled in anesthesia school at St. John's Hospital in Springfield, IL, staying on to teach anesthesia for two and a half years at the end of his training. His career as a Nurse Anesthetist spanned over 55 years and 36,000 anesthesia's performed, an accomplishment that he took great pride in. His work in the medical field took him to many different hospitals in Illinois, Indiana, West Virginia, Kentucky and Kansas.
His career choice also made possible the opportunity to meet the woman who would become the love of his life Carolyn. Their 51 year marriage served as a testament to all who knew them of what love and devotion was. This marriage resulted in one son, David. They experienced happiness in their family, their work and in the trips that they took over the years including their favorite locations of Mt. Rushmore, Gettysburg, PA and Frankfort, MI. Walter spoke often of how blessed he had been to have Carolyn at his side throughout the years and the adoration that he had for his grandchildren Riley and Aidan. Seeing his granddaughter Riley decide on the medical field for her career made him very proud to say the least.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, one son Jeffery and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He is survived by his wife Carolyn, his son David and wife Janel, one granddaughter Riley and one grandson Aidan.
A memorial service for Walter will be held on Saturday, January 8, 2022 at 3:00 p.m. in McCracken-Dean Funeral Home with Pastor Leon Goff officiating and military rites by Pana American Legion and will be accepted by McCracken-Dean Funeral Home who is assisting the family.
