The receipt of a telegram on Tuesday, April the twelfth, telling of the death on the night before of Mrs J R Vanhorne, beloved wife of the former pastor of the M E Church, South in this city, was a great shock and surprise to her many friends who had not learned of her illness which was of less than weeks duration.
On Monday night April the fourth Mrs Vanhorne retired in her usual health, but at 4 o'clock the next morning she awoke, struggling and talking incoherently, a physician was summoned and he found her slightly paralyzed on her right side, resulting from a slight effusion of water on the brain.
She, however, regained consciousness and was able to talk to those at her bedside. But on the following Saturday night about eight o'clock Mrs Vanhorne suffered another attack of paralysis, and fell into a profound coma, and continued in that condition until she peacefully and quietly passed away. Mrs Vanhorne resided in Hinton for three years and while here made many friends and won the esteem and affection of all whose privilege it was to know her. She was a devoted wife, a loving mother, and her memory will long be cherished by a wide circle of acquaintances.
She was a daughter of the late Elliott and Julia Pack Vawter of Monroe county; was born June 27th, 1842, at Union, W Va, and was united in marriage to Rev Vanhorne, March 28th, 1867, and died at Woodstock, Va, April 11, 1910.
Rev Vanhorne was the beloved pastor of the Methodist church here for three years and he has the sympathy of his many friends in his great bereavement.
