Buck was born the son of George W. and Jeanette Castle Smith. On April 20, 1928, he married Antoinette Goselin in Crown Point, Indiana. She died in December 2000.

Mr. Smith retired from AT&T in 1973 after a long career as a cable splicer, inspector, and section cableman working throughout the midwestern states. He was also a lifelong farmer in the St. Anne area and remained active all of his life.

He was an active member of the Aroma Park Methodist Church, a 15 year leader of the Aroma Hayshakers 4-H Club, and a 60 year member of the Masonic Lodge serving as master of the Aroma Park 378 for several years. Currently, he was a member of the Chebanse Lodge 429. He also belonged to the Scottish Rite Bodies of the Valley of Danville since 1968 and received the Meritorius Service Award.

Surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, Arnold and Barbara Smith of Danville, IL., Robert & Carol Smith of St. Anne, IL., Honer Jr. & Eda Smith of St. Anne, IL., one daughter and son-in-law, Janet & Gene Lesch of St. Anne, IL., eleven grandchildren, Linda McAlister, Kimberly Smith-Mack, Julie Smith, Mark Smith, Douglas Smith, Gina Lee, Gloria Bostic, Jay Lesch, Andrew Smith, Tony Smith, and Ann Smith, fourteen great-grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren. Also surviving is one sister, Georgia Hardy of Bonita Springs, FL.

He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Lois Smith, two sisters, Mildred Menard and Florence Diefenbach, four brothers, Cecil, Clyde and Kenneth and Arnold who died in infancy.
