Rev. Boyd was graduated from Washington College in 1860, and from Western Theological Seminary (later called Pittsburgh Theological Seminary in Pittsburgh, PA) in 1862. He was ordained to Presbyterian ministry in 1863 by Redstone Presbytery. Then he served as pastor in Presbyterian congregations in Pennsylvania and Illinois until 1884 when he moved to Iowa. In 1885 he was pastor of the Presbyterian congregations in Libertyville and Birmingham, Iowa. Then he went to Nebraska.
