William E. West was born 10-2-1860 in Washtenaw County, Michigan. The oldest son of Charles and Julia (Halsey) West. Charles served in the Civil War from 1864 until the end of the war leaving Julia alone at home to tend the farm and raise Will and his sisters. After Charles returned 3 more children were born to the union. After this time the family moved to Stockbridge, Michigan.

William E. West and Melvina Akay were married in 1887 in Michigan. Until 1892 they lived in the Stockbridge area. In 1892 they moved to Ingham Township to their home on Dexter Trail near this Cemetery. Will served on the board of this cemetery for many years. His sons, grandchildren,
great-grandchildren and great-great-great children cared for the Howard Cemetery until 1986 when it was turned over to the township for the care.

William died 5-12-1936 at his home on Dexter Trail. Melvina died there in 1939. They are buried with 3 of their children (Mildred, Roy & Olin) and 2 of their grandchildren (Ronald West & Helen West Briggs)and his great grandparents Halsey plus several other family members are buried in Howard Cemetery, Ingham Township, Michigan.
