Robert "Bobby" Mace, age 38, was the much-loved son of Bernard Mace and stepson of Donna Marie Bulich Mace of Columbus County, North Carolina. While at home in Oak Island, he passed peacefully into the loving arms of Jesus after a long illness.

Also among his surviving family members were his son, Jonathan; a younger brother, Christopher; brother Alex (both shown in pic) and two sisters, Laura and Megan.

Bobby's father Bernie composed the following tribute which he read at his son's memorial service:

"He Was My Son"

"He wasn't a lawyer, a statesman or a ball player. He was my son. It has a certain ring to it. He was my son and I loved him. Now he's gone, but I will always remember him as a baby, a cute chubby baby. Why? I don't know; maybe it's easier that way, when he was new and fresh and pure -- just another of God's miracles.

"I shouldn't cry, I should smile, no more worries, no tears, no bills, no pain. He died on Independence Day. There's not a better day to pass on to heaven, free of this bondage called earth.

"Robert is truly now free. My words can never ever express my feelings, my sorrow, my love, the simplicity of it -- love. You don't wish it, it's there or it isn't -- and I love Robert, it's that easy to say, 'I love you.'

"God keep you in heaven, keep you in my dreams. You'll always be in my heart. Next time I see you, it will be the bottom of the 9th for me, but we will both be on the same team -- God's."
