Roland W. Albert, 86
WESTBROOK -- Roland W. Albert, 86, of Overlook Drive, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 6, 2014, at his home with his family by his side.
Roland was born in Westbrook, the son of Auguste and Bernadette (Gagnon) Albert. He graduated from Coburn Classical Institute in Waterville. After his graduation from high school he entered the U.S. Navy during World War II. He completed his education at the University of Maine in Orono.
Roland spent his career as a clothier and co-owner of the Men's Shop stores, a popular men's and women's clothing store chain co-founded by his father. He retired in 1991. He was well respected for his personable nature and expertise, and had a large following of loyal customers.
He was on the board of directors of Northeast Bank and the Westbrook Community Hospital. He also served on the Westbrook Public Safety Commission. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Westbrook Kiwanis Club, the American Legion, the Westbrook Business Men's Association, and the New England Men's Apparel Club. Roland was also a 55-year member of the Portland Country Club.
Roland loved being with family and friends. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed boating and fishing on Sebago Lake and playing golf.
He was predeceased by his parents; a sister, Lorraine Johnley; and a great-grandson, Jonathan. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Janet (Rondeau) Albert of Westbrook; his five children, Nancy Tarpinian and her husband Michael, Paul Albert, Peter Albert and his wife Catherine, Rebecca Albert and her husband Alan Berman and Mary Ann Albert; his two sisters, Jeanne Lebel and Pauline Siulinski; seven grandchildren, Peter, Joseph, Charles and Annie Albert, Jana and Becca Tarpinian, and Devon Berman; four great-grandchildren, Jack, Colin, Olivia and Joshua; and many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Blais & Hay Funeral Home, 35 Church St., Westbrook. A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Anthony of Padua Church, Brown Street, Westbrook. Interment will be at a later date. The family would like to thank the staffs of the Barron Center, Mercy Hospital and VNA Home Health and Hospice for their care of Roland and support to his family during his illness.
