Emilia Colón Defendini

Our very dear Sister Maria Soledad Colon Defendini was called home to God on May 30, 2019 after a long illness. "Sole," as we lovingly called her, entered our Congregation in 1955. Soledad met our Congregation as a student at Catholic University in Ponce. As a student Soledad would go to the "campos" (country places) with S. Dominic Zoll. This commitment was very dear to Soledad's heart and was the key to her decision once she graduated from the University. As we read in Soledad's autobiography: she always wanted to be an elementary school teacher and also a catechist.
We were blessed by her decision. In practically every Convent "Sole" was the house treasurer. A woman of many talents. In every Convent "Sole" loved decorating for all different celebrations. In the larger community "Sole" also participated in different Committees. "Sole" was always collaborating! As school Principal she was always very organized, responsible, humble and joyful!
As S. Soledad wrote in her autobiography: "My ministry to so many children and their parents has been an enriching and growing experience I felt so happy being with them." This was her feeling also towards all the children she ministered in the Parish catechism Program.
We have been very blessed and we certainly count on her intercession for us in a very special way now. After her 60th Anniversary as an Amityville Dominican in Puerto Rico she wrote: "May the Lord bless us all and may His Word always be the greatest joy in our hearts"
