Sonny Overland passed away on Dec. 21, 2021, in his home in Sagle, Idaho, at the age of 97. Sonny, the son of Magnus and Emma Overland, was born and raised in Circle, Montana, with five brothers and sisters. He often spoke of Circle in his final years with great fondness, and imaginative story telling.

Sonny was an incredible woodsman, logger, inventor, machinist, and storyteller. He was a veteran of World War II in the Navy, where he learned to fly patrol planes. This is when his love of aviation began and lasted the remainder of his days.

Sonny and his wife Virginia returned home in 1954 and purchased Virginia's parents' land and started a ranch. They raised cattle and family on this ranch; it was hard work but they did it all together.

To those who came to hear his stories, we thank you. It meant the world to him to have you by his side in these last years, and it's meant the world to his family.

He was beloved and survived by his wife of 71 years, Virginia (Judge) Overland; two children, Alan Overland and Marie Overland Goossen; four grandchildren, Richard Sazama, Robert Overland, Alyssa Overland Buller and Amanda Blalock; and four great-grandchildren, each of whom he loved dearly.

Sonny will be laid to rest alongside his family, at Whispering Pines Cemetery near his home in Sagle. Arrangements are under the care of Coffelt Funeral Service.
