OBITUARY - Elmer Harlan GILBERT - MOORE FUNERAL HOME CEMETERY 1219 North Davis Drive, Arlington, TX 76012 =
SEPTEMBER 15, 1934 – DECEMBER 17, 2021Harlan Gilbert died peacefully on December 17, 2021 at Memorial Hermann Northeast Hospital in Humble, Texas after a brief hospital stay and surrounded by family. Elmer Harlan Gilbert was born September 15, 1934 in Fort Worth, TX. After graduating from Paschal High School in 1952, Harlan joined the United States Marine Corps from March 1954 to March 1957. He served primarily in the Military Police and always talked fondly of his time in the Marines. On a recent trip to California his highlight was visiting the Marine Corp Recruiting Depot in San Diego where he completed basic training. Harlan joined the Dallas Police Department in 1957, working as a patrolman, accident investigator, and eventually retired as a forgery detective. He left the Dallas PD in 1973 to join Exxon as a Special Agent until his retirement 21 years later.

Harlan Gilbert met Frances Kirkman of Dallas on a blind date in 1953. They married in 1956 while he was on a 30-day leave and enjoyed 65 wonderful years together. Harlan and Frances enjoyed traveling and went on numerous trips including Hawaii, Alaska, and the Panama Canal.

He worked the Houston Rodeo for 20 years on the Skybox Committee. The rodeo was always a highlight every year and he enjoyed sharing the rodeo experiences with his family.

Some of his other favorite things included • Playing golf • Dove hunting • His daily Starbucks coffee • LSU, Texas A&M, and Ole Miss football, mainly because of his children and grandchildren. • He wanted to be at every event for his family, especially his kids and grandkids. • Even though he had not driven in over 20 years, he always talked about buying a pick-up truck • He loved watching people and was very adept at assessing people by sight. • He always wanted to thank people and show his appreciation by shaking their hand, especially his care givers.

Harlan is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Frances Gilbert, daughter Karen Ruckstuhl and her husband Bert Ruckstuhl of Baton Rouge, LA , son Michael Gilbert and his wife Cathy Gilbert of Sugar Land, TX , brother Dale Gilbert and his wife Linda Gilbert of Arlington, TX , sister Joan Mason of Mesquite, TX, and his dog Sadee Sue.

He was very proud of his family including granddaughter Jennifer Ruckstuhl of Baton Rouge, LA, granddaughter Christie Branton and her husband Jon Branton of Baton Rouge, LA, grandson Blake Ruckstuhl of Baton Rouge, LA, granddaughter Allison Hicks and her husband Charles Hicks of Richmond, TX, Megan Fowler and her husband Brian Fowler of Brookshire, TX, Kelly Gilbert of Houston, TX, great-grandchildren Kambrie Branton, Easton Branton, Dawson Hebert, and Owen Fowler. Harlan was preceded in death by mother Katie Dossey Gilbert, father Jesse Elmer Gilbert, sister Janie Jenkins, brothers-in-law Dick Mason and Mike Jenkins, grandson Steven Gilbert, and in-laws Marcel and Connie Kirkman.
