Al was born on a farm outside of New Munich, Minnesota and attended grade school in a rural one room schoolhouse where he was introduced to English (German was spoken at home). As a 4-H member, Al learned of SAUM, the University of Minnesota's School of Agriculture boarding high school for rural Minnesota students. He enjoyed and excelled in his SAUM studies and in crop and livestock judging while working on campus to pay his high school tuition. Al subsequently attended the University of Minnesota where chemistry was his elective of choice. His university studies were interrupted by the activation of his National Guard unit during the Korean War. Al served in the US army stateside and was spared being sent to Korea as a result of his knowledge of shorthand which earned him a chaplain's assistant position at Camp Rucker, Alabama.

Following his discharge, Al completed his BS degree at the University of Minnesota. Al had a successful career in pharmaceutical sales for 36 years and had side businesses in property management, garage door opener repair, and as a livestock judge at the Minnesota State Fair. He made many good friends throughout his life--at work, several card clubs (bridge was his favorite), St. Peter's Church, Farmhouse Fraternity, and SAUM Alumni Association.

Al was a life-long learner and loved studying history and maps. He enjoyed gardening and pruning. He loved planning international and domestic travel, particularly road trips to see relatives on either coast. He served as election judge. He enjoyed college basketball and was a U of MN season ticket holder for decades. He loved his large family of origin and his regular trips 'up home' to visit (and play cards). The cornerstone of Al's life was his family and Catholic faith. He loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them. As a parishioner of the Church of St. Peter for 58 years he served in many roles including chairing the committee to restore St. Peter's historic church. He was involved with several Catholic groups and prolife organizations. Al was a natural people person who will be remembered for his welcoming spirit, infectious smile, and hearty laugh. He loved serving others and was generous with sharing his time and skills.

Al is preceded in death by his parents, Ferdinand and Josephine, youngest brother, Quentin, brothers-in-law Jim Ryan and Gerald Zink. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Alice Mayers; children, Ann Hoey (Jim), Alan (Betty) and Ava; grandchildren, Aaron, Kyle (Stephanie), Kurtis (Julie), Chelsea Olsen (Nick) and Edward Hoey; great grandsons, Gavin, Aleksandr and Roman; siblings, Rose Marie Ryan, Jeanette Terres (Ralph), Virginia Zink, Bernice Zink (Lester), Jerry (Mary), Linda Christen (Don) and Jack; and sister-in-law Ann DeRose (Jim).

The family is grateful for the care provided by St. Therese of New Hope and North Memorial Hospice.
