Obituary
Susannah Hoffman was born near Amanda, Ohio, Jan. 20, 1832; died at her home six miles west of LaPlata, July 6, 1918, aged 86 years, 5 months and 16 days.
Susannah Hoffman and John D. Shumaker were united in marriage March 19, 1850. To them were born twelve children, four daughters and eight sons. Five sons and one daughter live to revere the memory of this splendid mother who has preceded them into the Great Beyond.
John Shumaker, the husband and father, passed from this life May 19, 1877.
Mr. and Mrs. Shumaker were pioneers of Missouri and Adair county. They came from Ohio to this state and entered land, and this has been their home all these years.
Mrs. Shumaker confessed her Christ years ago and united with the M. E. church. Her life was a brave, true life, and she met the last years of her failing health and suffering with a patient mind and brave heart, just as she had the long lonely years of her life without the companionship of her husband, who has been gone from her forty-one years.
The community sympathizes with the family in the loss of this good mother, and especially with the only daughter, who is the youngest child, and lives so far away it was impossible for her to be present at this sad hour; also with the two sons who have made their home with the mother.
Mrs. Shumaker leaves besides her six children thirty six-grandchildren and twenty-two great grandchildren. The children living are, Jerome Shumaker of LaPlata, Saul Shumaker, Elmer; Sherd Shumaker, N. B. Shumaker and Lafe Shumaker, LaPlata, and Mrs. Belle Gluck, Eureka, Wash.
