Alden W. Whyte
Northampton, MA – Alden W. Whyte, 84, of Northampton, died Sunday at Cooley Dickinson Hospital. Born in Framingham, MA, Oct. 25, 1923, he was the son of the late John T. and Ida Mae (Jones) Whyte. Mr. Whyte grew up and was educated in Springfield where he attended local schools and graduated from the former Technical High School. In later years he also attended Springfield Technical Community College. An Army veteran of World War II he served in Africa, Germany, at General Eisenhower's HQ, and Phalsburg, France during the Berlin Wall Crisis. He was a member of the 104th Fighter Wing, Air National Guard from which he retired in 1982. He was employed in management for the former New England Tel. & Tel., retiring after 38 years of service. He was founder and Co-Commander of "Norton's Battery" a Civil War re-enactment group; a member of VFW Post 8006; American Legion Post #28; and several civil war history organizations. Mr. Whyte was also a member of Hampshire Lodge of Masons AF & AM in Haydenville. He is survived by his wife Kathleen Blair-Whyte; two sons; and two grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Laura A. Whyte; a brother, John and a sister, Elizabeth Anderson. The funeral will be held Thursday at 11 AM at Pease and Gay Funeral Home, 425 Prospect Street, Northampton with burial in Spring Grove Cemetery. There will be a calling hour preceding the service Thursday from 10 until 11AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
