Benjamin Tisinger "Biff" Beard, Sr., formerly of Hugo, died from complications of COVID-19 on Aug. 13, 2021, at the age of 62.

He was born in Paris in 1958 and raised on the bank of Red River in Frogville. His parents' ranch was on the land from which Sam Houston first saw Texas.

He played football for Hugo High School (Class of 1976) and then for Southwestern State Oklahoma University (Class of 1981). While there he met his cheerleader, Ginger Jones. They had their first date 40 years ago this month, the first "I love you" a week later, and they married the following May.

After an initial career as a pharmacist in North Texas, he worked as a dentist, first in Hugo then in Tulsa. They raised two sons. In 1992, they called the priest in Hugo and said they wanted to become Roman Catholic. He dropped the phone.

After their boys grew up, Biff and Ginger moved around. They lived in Oregon and Washington for several years and settled down in East Texas.

Biff loved to travel. He took Ginger (and sometimes the boys) everywhere from Alaska to Rome.

Biff discerned a call to the permanent diaconate in the Catholic Church. He began formation in 2018 and had been scheduled for ordination in 2022.

He was a founding parishioner and acolyte at Church of the Presentation in Montgomery, Texas. He was a proud husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was inordinately attached to his dogs. Above all, he loved Jesus Christ. For years he woke Ginger up with a rosary and, more recently, with the psalms and daily office.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Birdwell Beard and Martha Elizabeth Tisinger Allen Beard Wyche, both of Hugo; sister, Mardy Burden and brother, Charles Jr., both of Dallas.

He is survived by Ginger, his wife of 39 years, of Montgomery; sons: Charles (Brielle) of Tulsa and Benjamin Jr. of Spring, Texas; grandchildren: Jillian, Mychael, Benjamin, Tobias and Gabriella, all of Tulsa; great-granddaughter, Jacquelyn of Tulsa; sister, Betsy Goodnight of Caldwell, Texas, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services Monday (rosary) and Tuesday (Mass) at Church of the Presentation in Montgomery, 6:30 p.m. both evenings.
