Mrs. Matilda Wilcox Cummings, 73, wife of Horace H. Cummings, died in a local [Salt Lake City] hospital Saturday of complications following an operation for gall stones. She resided at 220 Canyon road.
Mrs. Cummings was born in Salt Lake City, March 22, 1860, daughter of Walter Eli Wilcox and Matilda Martha Watmough, but as her mother and a twin sister died at her birth, she was reared by her grandmother, Mary A. E. Watmough, a pioneer teacher of Utah. She received her elementary education at her grandmother's school, conducted in the family residence, taught in Scofield, and later graduated from the University of Deseret.
Like her grandmother and her husband, she spent the greater part of her life, 39 years in all, as a school teacher.
