LAVENDER, Donald James 1911-2010 - Donald passed away peacefully at the age of 98 years on January 12, 2010, after a brief illness. He was predeceased by his wife, Jean and is survived by Ronald. Brian and Darlene Lavender and Janice (Nick) Heemskerk; five grandchildren. James (Ellen). Meighan and Katie Lavender. Michael Heemskerk and Jennifer (Derek) Uthe and sister, Lois Labrash. Donald graduated from the University of Toronto (Guelph) in 1936 and came west to Edmonton to work for the Federal Department of Agriculture, retiring after 37 years. He was an avid gardener and inspiration to many with his crops of raspberries and production of raspberry jam until he was 97. At age 94 he participated in the World Masters Games winning two gold medals in the 100 m and 200 m hoping to inspire others to try new things even into their 90s. Mass of Christian Burial Saturday. January 16 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Clare Roman Catholic Church, 6310 118 Avenue. Reverend Robert Kasun CSB officiating with interment in Holy Cross Cemetery.
