He attended Muskegon High School and enlisted in the United States Navy during the Viet Nam War (1970-1975) serving aboard the submarine USS Alexander Hamilton (SSBN617) and the submarine USS Mariano G. Vallejo (SSBN658) in charge of firing Polaris and Poseidon missiles. He later attended Muskegon Business College and the College of William and Mary, receiving his degree in metallurgy and went on to develop several aircraft engine patents, own several businesses, including a motorcycle fabrication shop and several retail stores.
Survivors include his wife of 15 years, Wendi (nee Cole), brother Richard (Shelby), brother William F. Berg, Sr. (Kelly), nephews Joe, Greg and William, and a host of grand nephews and a grand niece, two very special daughters--Sarah and Susan and brother Steve.
Michael was predeceased by his parents, step-father Arthur Berg, brother Paul D. Zimmerman (Joanna), sister Renee Zimmerman, nephew P.J. Zimmerman and a very special mother-in-law, Rita Rodgers Cole.
Mike has been cremated and his remains are interred in Georgia National Cemetery until his wife, Wendi, can join him there.
